In the world of sports, perseverance often takes center stage, and the story of Pâmela dos Santos Soares is a testament to this enduring principle. Her journey, marked by six years of unwavering determination, culminated in a well-deserved spot on the Brazilian national rugby team, the Yaras.
Born and raised in Santo André, São Paulo, Santos' life took an unexpected turn when she stumbled upon a rugby program in 2015. Despite her lack of prior exposure to the sport, she found an instant connection, and her life was forever changed.
"The team embraced me as one of their own, even though it was my first time. I felt at home, and the challenges of the game only fueled my passion further," Santos recalls.
Her natural talent and dedication soon caught the attention of the national team selectors, but the road to donning the Amarelinha jersey was far from smooth. Repeatedly, Santos was called up to national team camps, only to be sent back home without making the final cut. Year after year, from 2018 to 2023, she faced disappointment, but her resilience never wavered.
"I had a saying that kept me going: 'abola bateu na trave' (the shot hit the post). I knew I was close, and I refused to give up," she explains.
The turning point came in 2024 when Emiliano Caffera, the new head coach, offered Santos a real chance to become a Yara. She seized the opportunity, moving to São Paulo and committing herself fully to the team. Her efforts paid off, and she finally made her debut as a representative and Test match player.
"My first cap for Brazil will always hold a special place in my heart. It was a moment of pure emotion and gratitude," Santos shares.
The World Cup in 2025 presented another milestone, with Santos being part of the squad that represented Brazil on the global stage. Despite the challenges and injuries leading up to the tournament, she played a pivotal role, and the experience left an indelible mark on her.
"The energy and spirit of the Yaras resonated far beyond the pitch. We showed the world that Brazil belongs in the elite of women's rugby, and our fighting spirit is best summed up by the native word 'Kirimbawasa,'" she says.
As Santos looks ahead to the WXV Global Series Challenger in September, her message to aspiring athletes is one of inspiration and resilience: "Rugby has the power to transform. It teaches you to never give up, to believe in yourself, and to fight for your dreams, no matter the obstacles."
Santos' story is a reminder that sometimes, the greatest victories are those that come after the longest journeys.
